Gencon Impressions

No, I was not there. But several people from the Uberguilds were and the general feedback, as well as some nice interviews draws some interesting conclusions.

PotBS - Given high marks and interest where little was shown before. Looks like this might be a sleeper MMO that has lots to do and is very fun.

WAR - Continues to impress with enthusiasm and gameplay. The booth was so crowded all the time they claim it was difficult to get in and see much, but from what they were able to get it impressed.

AoC - Huge letdown. Booth was covered to prevent under 18's from getting in, and after getting in, gameplay was lacking, graphics were average, and game hiccuping was happening every 7 seconds.

I was wondering what had happend. I just figured you'd been the target of some kiddie hackers, or poor hosting.

LOTR: anyone playing?
Posted at: 2007-05-01 21:11

QUOTE (MoltenP @ 2007-05-01 17:59) I'm thinking about getting it. Anyone playing? What server?

RIP is playing, and has the lifetime membership, on Brandywine. I am just a step away from getting it myself. Need a break from CoX, and I think this will fill the bill. On reading much about the "game changing for the better post 20th level" comments that I've seen. The explainations are that class defining, butt kicking, and generally cool, abilities become available. As well as dungeons opening up and a general increase in the "cool" monsters becoming available.

So if you're going to get it, I'd suggest making characters on Brandywine.

QUOTE (MoltenP @ 2007-04-19 21:20) Loren, you should sign up at the lotr website and at least download the client. 🙂

I did install it from a DVD via PC Gamer. I've played it a couple of days now, with a level 8 Elf Hunter and a level 6 Human Champion(?). I'm a bit distress about how much travel time there is. It's my biggest gripe about MMO's and why I like CoX so much. Spend 10 minutes running to point A to kill 10 rats, which takes 10 minutes, then run 10 minutes to point B to turn the rats into NPC X, who will now give you the jar to take back to NPC Y, who is "only" a 15 minutes run back to.

As the Elf Hunter, running around is a big thing as far as I can tell. As the Human Champion, not so much so far. But some of that is simply that the Human staring area seems much more compact. Or maybe it has more to do with me kind of getting how they stack thier missions so I can take fewer trips over the same areas.

There is also the level 20 hump. Quite a number of players have commented that the game goes through a very good big change after 20. I have not been able to find out why, but it makes me wary. I'll try to dig up more, but hope that it's more of a group oriented slant, as well as a more "cool" transition. I'm fairly tired of killing wildlife.

QUOTE (covert.c. @ 2007-04-19 03:08) I gave you my email in the post above. BTW, covert.c == kafka == craig

That email, at least my pitiful attempt at it, has failed on both variations that I tried.

QUOTE (covert.c. @ 2007-04-17 09:38) Gosh, Headcrash has been MIA for so long that (if I'm not mistaken) I don't think he's even running a TS server anymore. I tried the old address and it was offline... correct me if I'm wrong (and email me the details covert.c AT covertcreation blah blah)

Actually, the TS server is still running. It is the BFG one however. I just send the info to you Molten. But I don't know to get the info to you, (Kao, right?).

I know RIP is playing on Brandywine server atm. Infernoed also is taking a look at the game, but I'm still a bit on the fence. I am still having fun in CoX, but certain things about it are starting to strain me a bit. Not ready to just give in and try the next "new" thing I guess. Or maybe it's more that although I think LoTRO will be fine, thats it. It will just be fine. And I'm already playing a fine game. Do I really need to move on and start over again?

Probably. I just with AoC, Huxley, or Warhammer Online were coming out first.

Yep, you read the title right. Master of Magic. Not MoM2. The one and only.

I wanted to pass along that you too can play your DOS games of old. There is a little DOS emulator program out there, DOSBOX, at which allows you to emulate DOS and play your favorite DOS games. RIP turned me onto it and both of us are now enjoying one of out favorite games, Master of Magic.

One of the things to remember, these games are graphically poorer then your memory thinks they are. 😀 Also, you will want to retain how you set up and installed the game as you will have to path it in DOSBOX. For instance, MoM installed to c:mpsmagic. When you run DOSBOX you will have to set it up so that it recognizes C drive as c:mpsmagic. It's very simply once you do it, but as far as I know you will have to do it every time you want to play whichever DOS game. It really is pretty easy though.

QUOTE (covert.c. @ 2007-04-05 16:38) My heart skipped a beat when I saw this... get there and sign up for AoC beta!

Doh! I see I am just a tad late coming to post the same thing. 😀

So what do all of you who have tried the game in open beta think? RIP has logged in to TS recently and says he's having fun with it, what about the rest of you? When I read postings like this:

"LOTRO's gameplay is designed to draw you in initially - YES. BUT - The game gets exponentially better as you level up. So what they have done is created a very enticing game at the start and continued to make it better as you continue. They've successfully given the game the ability to pull people in deeper and deeper. Look at Angmar and other higher level zones. The quests are epic in scope and feel. When you're battling these mobs (Which LOOK amazing. Simply amazing. Best in ANY MMo) you think to yourself "Woah! I'm fighting such a cool monster!" To me that's taking it to another level."

are when I start to do, "Hmmm....maybe I will give it a go even though I wasn't really planning to".
